AM I TRULY MY ZODIAC SIGN?

When someone asks us about our zodiac sign, we immediately respond with an assertive one-worded answer: “Sagittarius” – “Taurus” – “Libra”. Because who doesn’t own their zodiac sign, right? Afterall, this is the sign that hangs around our neck on a celestial gold pendant!

But have you ever felt that you do not truly align with your zodiac sign? That the independent and pioneering nature of an Aries isn’t totally you? Or the secretiveness of a Scorpio just doesn’t mesh?

Or maybe you feel that your zodiac sign sums you up to a tee, but there are other aspects of your personality that just aren’t captured in the narrowness of this sign? This is because there is so much more to us than our Sun sign – or the zodiac sign we commonly refer to ourselves as. To understand our complete horoscope, we also need to consider our Moon and rising signs. These signs reflect different aspects of our character and work together with our Sun sign to build a complete package of who we are and the way we present ourselves to the world.

OUR SUN SIGN

Our Sun sign is the zodiac sign that the Sun was positioned in at the time, place and date of our birth. It reflects our ego, core identity and inner self spirit – where we shine in our lives and our potential as an individual in this lifetime. The Sun is the centre from which all energy radiates.

The Sun takes one year to orbit the zodiac and spends approximately one month per sign. The Sun moves into each zodiac sign at around the same time each year, meaning that all individuals with the same Sun sign are born around the same time of year. Hello my Virgo friends!

If you are unsure of your Sun sign, you can use the below to work out which sign you are most likely to be:

  • ARIES: 21 March – 20 April
  • TAURUS: 21 April – 21 May
  • GEMINI: 22 May – 21 June
  • CANCER: 22 June – 23 July
  • LEO: 24 July – 23 August
  • VIRGO: 24 August – 23 September
  • LIBRA: 24 September – 23 October
  • SCORPIO: 24 October – 22 November
  • SAGITTARIUS: 23 November – 21 December
  • CAPRICORN: 22 December – 20 January
  • AQUARIUS: 21 January – 19 February
  • PISCES: 20 February – 20 March

OUR MOON SIGN

Our Moon sign is the sign that the Moon was positioned in at the moment of our birth. It reflects our emotions, feelings and basic emotional needs for security, love and comfort in this lifetime. The Moon is also reflective of our mother or mother-figure, symbolising enfolding arms that nurture us through life.

The Moon takes 27.3 days to orbit planet Earth. Throughout this time, we see her flow through eight distinct phases – all the way from new to full and back again. But unlike the Sun, the Moon transitions through the zodiac much quicker, spending only around two days per sign. This means that even though you may have the same Sun sign as your bestie, there is a high chance that you have a different Moon sign.

OUR RISING SIGN

Our rising sign, or otherwise known as our ascendent, is the sign that is positioned on the first house cusp in our natal chart. It is the zodiac sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the time, place and date of our birth. It represents the image we project outwards to the world – our identity, first impressions, temperament and appearance. It also symbolises our unconscious experience of birth and how this has shaped the way we consciously respond to our environment.

Our rising sign is more outward than our Sun sign – depicting our projected self or ‘mask’ we wear in the outside world – whereas our Sun sign is more inward and representative of our soul. Our rising sign is the sign that greets a social situation. How would you respond if you were suddenly thrust into a room full of strangers? What are your immediate thoughts? How would you act? How would you dress? This is your rising sign talking.

HOW DO I FIND OUT MY MOON AND RISING SIGNS

Unfortunately, unlike our Sun sign, our Moon and rising signs are much more difficult to determine without the help of an Astrologer. All charts purchased from NM Zodiacs centre around our personalised astrological wheel – aka map of the sky at the time, place and date of our birth – which clearly illustrates our individual Sun, Moon and rising signs.

However, it is not all bad news! The important thing to remember is that we are much more than our Sun sign. We are a combination of the influence of entire cosmos at the second we entered the world.

Consider the potentials of each zodiac sign (listed below) in relation to your emotions and feelings, and the way you project yourself to the world. You may just be able to pick your Moon and rising sign! Or at least be on the way to understanding aspects of your personality and why you are the way you are.

  • ARIES: Determined, independent, energetic
  • TAURUS: Possessive, generous, warm
  • GEMINI: Communicative, flexible, curious
  • CANCER: Loving, homely, security-conscious
  • LEO: Extravagant, playful, strong
  • VIRGO: Precise, methodical, poised
  • LIBRA: Fair, charming, diplomatic
  • SCORPIO: Focussed, deep-thinking, passionate
  • SAGITTARIUS: Adventurous, optimistic, happy-go-lucky
  • CAPRICORN: Hard-working, organised, practical
  • AQUARIUS: Innovative, progressive, inquisitive
  • PISCES: Intuitive, mystical, warm-hearted

So next time someone asks about your zodiac sign, why not give them more than they bargained for – “Sun in Aquarius, Moon in Cancer, and Pisces rising”. You will be sure to blow them away!
